Giani Ice Cream was started by a refugee who came to India from Pakistan. His name is Giani Gurcharan Singh. Before partition, he had a famous sweet shop in Pakistan. After partition, he came to Delhi and spent some time in a refugee camp here. After this he moved to Fatehpuri Chandni Chowk.
First Outlet Of Gyani Ice Cream
In the 90s, his grandson Taranjit Gyani joined this family business with a new idea. He thought why not make all the ice creams made by him available to people on a large scale. With this thought, he opened the first outlet of Gyani Ice Cream in Rajouri Garden, Delhi. This was a residential area, so the taste of his ice cream made a place in the hearts of even middle class families.
This Ice Cream Gave Competition
It is not that they did not face any kind of competition during this time. They used to face tough competition from Nirula’s ice cream. But Giani Ice Cream always experimented with their ice cream and started adding new flavors to it. People liked this thing about them. Due to this, their ice cream became a hit among the people. Started Making Ice Cream In An Old Freezer
Even a common man could easily buy and eat it. His grandson Taranjit Giani says that celebrities like Raj Kapoor and Mohammad Rafi have also eaten the sweets made by him. In 1970, Giani Gurcharan Singh’s son Gurbachan joined his business. After this, he brought an old freezer and started making and selling ice cream by hand. The taste of the ice cream was also amazing, so now he had to buy some machines to make it.

It all started in the year 1956 at a place known only to the regular connoisseurs of the food called Giani-di-Hatti, located in the most traditional area of Delhi, namely Fatehpuri, Chandni Chowk and it still continues to be one of the most renowned eateries of old Delhi.
This was the period that saw Giani Gurcharan Singh who was a traditional sweetmeat maker from the then Layallpur (Faislabad), Pakistan shifted base to Delhi and started the business here. He began preparing his desirable rabri-faluda and mango shakes with the love and dedication he put into his efforts accompanied with the finest quality. This was indeed the call of the people of the walled city and within the shortest of time the name ‘Giani’ which means the learned in Punjabi was familiar to everyone.
Indeed in the next two decades the little enterprise grew up and the credit for the business acumen went to Giani Gurcharan Singh who possessed skill and art and made icecream with his hands. Yes, it was the period capable of such magic when prominent personalities like MP’s, Raj Kapoor and singers like Mohammad Rafi used to come to savour the taste and aura of the shop.
On the eve of the new millennium, the next generation at Giani Ice Cream decided to spread the family business further. In 1999, the first Giani Ice Cream store came up in Rajouri Garden, then a newly ‘happening’ market in West Delhi.
